On Tuesday, November 17th, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and other Michigan organizations will present Michigan’s Root Beer Summits: Conversations on Race and Ethnic Diversity.

Following the example of President Barack Obama’s Beer Summit held earlier this year, these concurrent sessions held in cities throughout the state provide an opportunity for frank and open discussion on our differences and similarities. The hope is that these discussions can spark statewide interest in moving beyond our many differences to work toward our common interests as a state.

The summit closest to “River Country” will be held at the Fire Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative at 1249 Portage in Kalamazoo from 6 to 9 p.m.  Dr. Michelle Johnson will be the “local leader” for the event.

Root Beer Summit meetings will also be held in Benton Harbor/St. Joseph, Farmington/Farmington Hills, Flint, Lansing, Macomb County, Saginaw and Traverse City.  Details about Detroit, Grand Rapids and Mt. Pleasant events will be shared at a later time.

To learn more, serve as a facilitator, or to volunteer to help with an event, please contact the individuals for the specific site you are interested in, using the information that appears below.
