Voters in the Three Rivers Health Authority have soundly defeated a proposed two-mill tax levy.
Unofficial results from balloting on Tuesday (May 5th) show that 1,359 “no” votes were cast compared to 806 “yes” votes – 62.77 percent versus 37.23 percent.
Had the millage been approved, it would have generated approximately $1.4 million in the first year of a ten-year period, money that would have been available for capital improvements.
The Three Rivers Health Authority Board is scheduled to meet at 7 a.m. Thursday (May 7th) to discuss the election results and what action to take in view of the defeat.
Three Rivers Health has been dealing with some strong financial challenges in the current recessionary economy and recorded a loss of $3.2 million in 2008.
The Three Rivers Health Authority includes the City of Three Rivers and the townships of Constantine, Fabius, Lockport and Park.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackIt’s a shame that the citizens of this fine area didn’t vote to support the hospital. Was $150 really that difficult to come up with to support the hospital that may one day save YOUR LIFE???? How many of you spend that much in a month FOR BEER???? However,I do agree that the hospital DOES NOT NEED the offices in Centreville, White Pigeon, etc.. It’s not that far to drive to Three Rivers.
Waste does not constitute a need for me and my family to be forced to pay more tax money – no matter what I decide to use my money on. Good business practices and decisions will help a business more than anything else…not welfare provided via the folks who (remember this) pay when they go to the hospital as well. I see lots of TR Health billboards, etc. on the highways that I know cost thousands per month – those could be stopped. This could save quite a bit. I’m proud of our community for making this decision.
