State Rep. Matt Lori is working to limit the number of young passengers that can ride in a car with a new driver, a move he says will save lives.
Lori, a former county sheriff, supports legislation that limits drivers with a Level 2 Graduated License to only one passenger under the age of 21 allowed in their vehicle, except for immediate family members.
The bill also prohibits young drivers from using cell phones or other wireless devices except to report an emergency.
“I think it’s a good bill. Young drivers need to concentrate on learning the skills of being a good driver,” Lori said. “They don’t need to be distracted by all their friends messing around in the car, and they certainly don’t need to be using a cell phone.”
Level 2 Graduated License provisions apply to new drivers for the first six months in a vehicle without adult supervision.
Lori expects a vote in committee soon, and then the bill heads to the full House.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a Trackbackleave the kids alone mr lori. we already have enough laws on the books. at some point we need to draw the line and i think that time came and past some time ago. the texting while driving ban is a perfect example of an unnecessary law. people should know better, and if they don’t, police already had every right to pull the person over for driving carelessly. all this bill will do is put more young drivers on the road at the same time since they can no longer carpool with their buddies. stop wasting our tax dollars with this crap!
number one reason you don’t talk to police – there are thousands of laws on the books and if you’re like me, you only know a tiny percentage of them, so the last thing you want to do is open your mouth and unknowingly incriminate yourself. too many freakin laws people…
