Monday, March 15, 2010 was a history making day at Glen Oaks Community College as the school near Centreville set the new world record for the Largest Meatball.

Lon Huffman, PR/Marketing Manager at Glen Oaks, offered some insights into the events of the day in the following e-mail message to the River Country Journal:

The meatball took two more hours to cook through than they thought, so it was about 6 p.m. when it finished. Yet a large crowd remained to hear the updates on where the temperature of the meatball stood and how soon it would come out. Probably 500 or so people at GOCC despite a cool, 40 degree evening.

The meatball was removed from the large cooker and the weight was ultimately recorded at 254 lbs. (beating the earlier record of 222 lbs). They had to subtract the weight of the apparatus that held the meat and some 30 lbs. of meat that needed to be cooked a bit longer for health safety sake, but it still beat the record.
