As announced last week, 28 laid-off Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers will be recalled effective January 11, 2010, using federal funds available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The MSP has also determined three more laid-off troopers can be recalled using funding awarded to the department earlier this month in the annual Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program. These troopers were recalled based on seniority and will also return to work on January 11th.
In Southwest Michigan, this second wave of recalled troopers includes one each at White Pigeon, Bridgman, Battle Creek, Hastings and Coldwater and two at Niles.
The addition of these troopers brings at-post trooper staffing to 1,029 troopers.
Fifty-five troopers previously returned to work on November 16th. One trooper waived his/her contractual rights of recall and three probationary troopers have been separated from the department. Of the 100 total troopers laid off on June 28th, ten troopers currently remain on layoff.
