Water Tower Rendering

Wednesday evening (December 9th) the Sturgis City Commission will consider leasing space on the city’s water tower, located between Thurston Woods Park and the Doyle Community Center, to St. Joseph County for the purpose of placing antennas to help improve emergency radio communications with the 911 Dispatch Center in Centreville.

If the lease is approved, the County plans on placing a 40-foot tall tower on top of the water tower.  With antennas in place, the total height of the structure added to the water tower would be 57 feet, a significant addition to the current structure.

Placing the tower and antennas at this height provides the best possible clearance to ensure consistent communication between Sturgis and the 911 Dispatch Center in Centreville.  To send a radio signal between these locations without obstruction, the radio signal must clear the hill and trees at Featherstone Road.

Locations for transmitters and other related radio equipment have been selected for four areas of the County.  In addition to the proposed Sturgis location, sites have been secured in the Three Rivers area, White Pigeon, and the Village of Mendon.

Commissioners will consider the lease agreement during their regularly scheduled meeting which starts at 7 p.m. in the Wiesloch Raum of City Hall, located at 130 N. Nottawa.    Citizens are invited to attend and provide feedback on the proposed project.
