These are challenging times – very tough times for some – as the ongoing recession makes life more difficult for many of us. In some cases, “suffering” is not too strong a word to use in describing the effects of the economic downturn.
How should we respond to the current situation? What’s the best way to help those in need? Is there anything to be gained from these times and the hardships we’re experiencing? Is there good that can flow from the bad?
In a recent post on his Everyday Leadership website and in his weekly e-mail newsletter called Reading for Leading, Dan Mulhern has written a thought-provoking piece entitled “My Mom the Deviant – Leads in This Brutal Recession.” Here’s a brief excerpt:
This recession sucks. There’s enough sadness, anger, and fear to point about a million fingers. But it also affords a lot of chances for humanity to emerge, too, and for positive deviance.
In my opinion, Dan Mulhern’s writing is well worth reading, as are the comments from readers who have written in response to the column. See what you think by clicking on the following link to access these items: “My Mom the Deviant – Leads in This Brutal Recession.”

Thanks for the mention of my reading for leading column. On my radio show today Kapila Viges from MEDC was talking about how 50% of the Fortune 500 companies were launched during down economic times. So, there is economic opportunity in tough times.
But as I point out in my blog piece – and as you indicate with your great questions here – there is surely opportunity to grow spiritually. We have great chances to bind up people’s wounds and build stronger bonds.
Thanks for continuing this important conversation!

Dan,
Thanks for your reply to my post. And thanks, too, for the thoughtful, thought-provoking, inspiring and compassionate work you are doing. Hopefully, the thinking and discussion we foster through our efforts will be helpful as all of us try to address the challenges before us.
Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving!
