As expected, George Ramsey is seeking a recount of votes cast for First District commissioner in the November 3rd general election.

Results from the balloting showed that Judy Gilchrist was elected to the position for a two-year term by a one-vote margin over Ramsey, 207 to 206, and the Board of Canvassers has certified her as the winner.

According to St. Joseph County Clerk Pattie Bender, Ramsey is requesting that the recount be conducted in all four precincts in the city and that it be done by hand.

In explaining the recount procedure, Bender said that Gilchrist has 48 hours to file a counter-petition, which will be Monday since the clerk’s office is closed on Saturday.  She also has seven days from Thursday (November 5th) to file an objection to the recount petition filed by Ramsey.  If she files the objection, the Board of Canvassers then has five days to make a determination on the objection and whether or not the recount will proceed.

Bender said that Friday, November 13th, has been set tentatively as the date for a recount.
