Voters in the City of Sturgis have overwhelmingly approved a proposal to transfer ownership of Sturgis Hospital from the City of Sturgis to Sturgis Hospital, Inc., a newly formed, locally controlled not-for-profit Michigan corporation.
Unofficial results show more than 68 percent of the voters endorsed the idea compared to less than 32 percent in opposition. The tally was 800 to 369.
In balloting for Sturgis City Commission seats, David Smith defeated Caralee Mayer for Precinct 1, 383 to 199, and, in a four-way race for At-Large Commissioner, the winner was Michael Gay with 539 votes followed by Keith Waltke with 328, Steven Shevick with 181, and Michael Thyng with 103. Karen Stephens, Kenneth Malone and Karl Littman ran without opposition for commission seats from Precincts 2, 3 and 4, respectively.
