Tuesday (November 3rd) is Election Day for some residents of “River Country.”
In the City of Three Rivers, there are contests for two of the four positions to be filled for two-year terms. Judy Gilchrist and George Ramsey are vying for the First District commissioner seat and Jim Everett and Wendy Shank are competing for the post of Commissioner-at-Large. Mayor Allen Balog and Third District Commissioner Earl Stark are unopposed in their bids for another term.
In the City of Sturgis, Caralee Mayer and David Smith are in the running for commissioner from Precinct 1 and there’s a four-way contest for Commissioner-at-Large with Michael Gay, Steven Shevick, Michael Thyng and Keith Waltke seeking the post. Karen Stephens, Kenneth Malone and Karl Littman are unopposed for commission seats from Precincts 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Sturgis voters will also decide the fate of a proposal to transfer ownership of Sturgis Hospital from the City of Sturgis to Sturgis Hospital, Inc., a newly formed, locally controlled not-for-profit Michigan corporation.
In the Colon school district, voters are being asked to approve a $23.1 million bonding proposal “for the purposes of erecting, furnishing and equipping additions to and remodeling, refurnishing and re-equipping the middle/high school to accommodate a pre K-12 program; acquiring and installing educational technology improvements and developing and improving playgrounds and the site.”
In the Constantine school district, voters are being asked to approve a “Headlee override” that would enable the levying of a full 18 mills for operational purposes. Currently, the district levies 16.7339 and the amount will continue to decrease if not restored to the 18 mills allowed by the State of Michigan.
And, in Cass County, voters will decide the fate of a one-fifth-of-a-mill tax levy to support operation of the county’s Enhanced 911 emergency telephone system.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
