A Democrat plan to tax doctors in order to help balance the state budget died in the Senate on Wednesday (October 28th) with only four senators voting in favor of the plan and 32 voting against.

State Rep. Matt Lori, who voted against the health care tax when it was in the House, congratulated the Senate for killing the plan.

The last thing we need to do is make the cost of getting medical treatment in Michigan more expensive by taxing doctors,” said Lori, of Constantine.  “I think the governor should stop trying to raise taxes and sign the bipartisan agreement lawmakers sent to her nearly a month ago.”

If approved, the defeated legislation would have levied a 3 percent tax on physicians’ gross receipts and raised the cost of health care in Michigan by an estimated $300 million annually.

Before dying in the Senate, 56 Democrats voted in favor of the bill in the House.  Not a single Republican lawmaker supported the new tax on health care.
