The Three Rivers City Commission has okayed the acceptance of donated funds for a new “narcotics detection canine” and the expenditure of $10,000 of those funds to purchase the dog.
The action during Tuesday evening’s (October 20th) commission meeting comes in the wake of the September 30th death of K-9 Officer Anjia and efforts underway since then to raise funds for a replacement dog.
Police Chief Tom Bringman said the amount needed to get the dog on its way from Europe has been raised and fundraising activities are occurring to raise additional money needed for training and putting the new dog in service.
The dog will be trained to track, conduct building searches, open area searches, and provide suspect apprehension/handler protection.
The dog is expected to arrived before the end of November and begin the training process.
Mayor Allen Balog noted that one of the fundraising projects – a spaghetti dinner – will be held at the Constantine American Legion this coming Friday (October 23rd) from 6 to 8 p.m.
