The Three Rivers Fire Department (TRFD) was dispatched to a home in the 600 block of Elm St. at 1:17 Friday morning (October 16th) to a report of smoke alarm activation with smoke in the residence.

Fire crews arrived to find a light smoke condition. Investigation revealed the furnace had malfunctioned. The early warning by the smoke detectors kept the problem isolated to the furnace.

“Had the house continued to fill with smoke while the occupant slept, there is a good chance she would have been overcome by carbon-monoxide poisoning,” said Captain Jeff Bloomfield of the TRFD.  “Without the smoke detectors, this could have had a much different ending.”

On the week following Fire Prevention Week, this incident emphasizes the importance of installing and maintaining smoke detectors.
