Three Rivers Health continues to prepare for the October 1st transition to an altered way of providing physicians for the emergency room at the Three Rivers Health Medical Center.

Matt Chambers, President and CEO, provided an update on the matter during the regular monthly meeting of the Three Rivers Health Authority Board of Directors on Thursday (September 25th).

Chambers noted that the current provider, Kalamazoo Emergency Associates, indicated in June that it would not be able to provide emergency room coverage after the end of September because of a nationwide shortage of emergency room physicians.

Chambers reported that, “We already have over half of the shifts covered by locum tenens physicians during October and there are more signing up daily.”

Chambers said, “We’re looking at all kinds of options – whether we employ our emergency room physicians or form a group of emergency room physicians locally.”

Chambers said, “The emergency room will remain open and that’s, obviously, an essential service in the community and we aim to keep it there.”
