Bowman Park, located at N. Main and Hoffman streets in Three Rivers, will be known in the future as “Bowman Memorial Park” following action by the Three Rivers City Commission Tuesday evening (July 21st).

The name change came at the request of Ken Baker, former police chief and city commissioner, who noted that Bowman Park was a cemetery and one grave marker is still located in the park.  According to a staff report from City Manager Joe Bippus, “records are sketchy, but it appears that the park was supposed to remain a cemetery or revert back to the owner/heirs.”

The report goes on to say that, “Because at least one grave is still there, the park meets this requirement.  However, Ken believes that the park should be named ‘Bowman Memorial Park’ to honor the wishes and intent of the family.  The park used to be called ‘John H. Bowman Memorial Park,’ but was changed to ‘Bowman Park.’”

According to the report, there are no fiscal effects from the change at this time, “but at some point the city would have to change the current sign to reflect the name change.”
